The first chapter of women’s soccer at SCU is about to be written as the Lady Eagles prepare to begin their inaugural campaign. With the recent promotion into the NAIA, everyone is well aware of the tough road that lies ahead of them. The first SCU Women’s Soccer team will consist of 18 players, with only four arriving to SCU with prior collegiate soccer experience. However, the team spirit is still ablaze for the Lady Eagles as they draw closer to their opening match on Saturday.
Despite losing a few solid players to redshirt, including central midfielder Melissa Addington, the team still looks well equipped for the start of the season. The Lady Eagles will be looking for leadership from a trio of players that have come to SCU with a previous understanding of the game of collegiate soccer. Erin Fleharty looks to take on the role of team captain after suffering a serious knee injury at the conclusion of a standout freshman season at OCU. All eyes will also be focused on midfielder Ashley Sawyer, formerly from USAO, and goalkeeper Amy Witt, from Mid America Christian, as they will also be called to serve as leaders for the young and inexperienced team.
Inexperience, however, will not stop Greg Andrews and his Lady Eagles from taking on opponents at full force. Serving as SCU’s central midfielders, Cassie Andrews and Crystal Ybarbo will be called upon to control the middle of the field and provide distribution to the attackers. Joining Erin in the attack will be the swift duo of midfielders Haley Boettler and Meagan Shelton. “Shelton and Boettler will combine an outstanding pace with a strong sense of urgency around the goal.” comments Coach Andrews.
Defense will be anchored by a solid pair of central defenders in Alex Meyer and Miranda White, who Andrews notes will “coalesce nicely to control our defense.”
The upcoming season for the SCU Lady Eagles will be a thorny one, but Coach Andrews is confident that his team has what it takes to get the job done. “After losing a few players to red shirt this year, we may be short in numbers, but, these young ladies possess a strong desire to come out of the gate strong and make a statement about the women’s program here at SCU. I have high expectations for this team and this season and I have complete confidence that we will be able to compete and maybe surprise a few teams this year.”
The Lady Eagles will open up their season on Saturday, August 28th at 4:00 PM against St. Greg’s.
