SCU to host NCCAA Regional Women’s Soccer Tournament

Bethany- Southwestern Christian University will host the NCCAA Regional Women’s Soccer Tournament this week.  Games will begin on Wednesday at 5 pm and the Regional Championship game will be held on Saturday at 12 pm.

SCU Women’s soccer team will play in the opening game on Wednesday at 5 pm against McMurry University on the Southern Nazarene University field.  The games will move to SCU’s soccer field for Friday and Saturday games.

Women’s soccer began at SCU only four years ago and the Lady Eagles have been ranked in the top fifteen in NCCAA this season with a winning overall record, 9-8-1.

“We have some extremely talented member on this year’s squad, many of which have been nominated for honors on several levels,” said Greg Andrews, women’s soccer head coach.

But for these women, their level of dedication goes beyond the soccer field. Earlier this semester the team, along with former teammates and students from SCU, participated in “Light the Night Walk,” which is a fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to raise funds for therapies and treatment advances for blood cancer patients.  The two mile walk was hosted by Oklahoma City University.

“We are extremely blessed to have such an amazing group of young women on our team,” Andrews said. “They lead with Christian integrity and love not only on the field but off the field as well. The support that we receive for ‘Light The Night’ from both present, as well as past, team members is truly a heartwarming moment for our family.”

Andrews and his wife, Debbie, have a personal connection to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through their son Josh who was diagnosed with leukemia three years ago. Josh was not given the typical chemotherapy treatment but instead he takes two pills twice a day. He has been in full remission for over a year.

“The research and development for this medication was not available ten years ago, but due to the research done it is available to those suffering from his type of leukemia,” Andrews said. “Thanks to the funds raised through the LLS there is new hope and treatments for those suffering from this disease. This year the Oklahoma chapter of the LLS raised over $175,000 and our team raised over $5,000.”
