8.27.10 - The Southwestern Christian University men's soccer team opened their 2010 season Friday afternoon with a come-from-behind win in an intense match up with the University of the Ozarks.
SCU fell behind early on as the NCAA Division II squad from Arkansas, also tagged as the Eagles, netted the ball within the first thirty seconds of action. From then on, both teams battled back and forth throughout the first half of the physical contest.
Several scoring opportunities were available for SCU to tie it up, but it wasn't until the final minute of the first half that the Eagles would strike successfully. After an extended time out due to the injury of Josh Torres, the Southwestern Christian University squad was able to crack the defense as Chris Galindo placed the ball home off an assist from Adam Kay, knotting the score at one going into halftime.
Second half action was dominated by SCU as the team continued to create opportunities and apply pressure to the opposition.
In the 64th minute of play, Jose Castillo drew a foul in the box that would be capitalized by a James Cottage penalty kick, putting SCU on top with a score of 2-1.
The remainder of the game continued to be intense for both teams, but the Southwestern Christian University Eagles held on to claim the victory.
"Our man of the match definitely has to be goalkeeper Joe Shulberg." stated Coach Cagle. "Our team defense hung him out to dry with that first goal but he battled back and really proved to be a brick wall in the net for us."
"This game was a great learning experience for our squad this early in the season. Our team had to fight to come back after being down by a goal early on. It really helps our guys draw confidence in one another."
The Eagles will return to action Saturday, September 4th when they travel to Muskogee, Oklahoma to take on Bacone College. Game time is set for 3:00 PM.
