  • SCU tastes victory early on in season

8.27.10 - The Southwestern Christian University men's soccer team opened their 2010 season Friday afternoon with a come-from-behind win in an intense match up with the University of the Ozarks.

SCU fell behind early on as the NCAA Division II squad from Arkansas, also tagged as the Eagles, netted the ball within the first thirty seconds of action. From then on, both teams battled back and forth throughout the first half of the physical contest.

Several scoring opportunities were available for SCU to tie it up, but it wasn't until the final minute of the first half that the Eagles would strike successfully. After an extended time out due to the injury of Josh Torres, the Southwestern Christian University squad was able to crack the defense as Chris Galindo placed the ball home off an assist from Adam Kay, knotting the score at one going into halftime.

Second half action was dominated by SCU as the team continued to create opportunities and apply pressure to the opposition.

In the 64th minute of play, Jose Castillo drew a foul in the box that would be capitalized by a James Cottage penalty kick, putting SCU on top with a score of 2-1.

The remainder of the game continued to be intense for both teams, but the Southwestern Christian University Eagles held on to claim the victory.

"Our man of the match definitely has to be goalkeeper Joe Shulberg." stated Coach Cagle. "Our team defense hung him out to dry with that first goal but he battled back and really proved to be a brick wall in the net for us."

"This game was a great learning experience for our squad this early in the season. Our team had to fight to come back after being down by a goal early on. It really helps our guys draw confidence in one another."

The Eagles will return to action Saturday, September 4th when they travel to Muskogee, Oklahoma to take on Bacone College. Game time is set for 3:00 PM.

  • 2010 Men's Soccer Outlook

Head Coach Neil Cagle's Men's Soccer Team is fired up and ready for the upcoming fall season. Captain James Cottage returns from an ACCA National Championship squad that consistently scored numerous goals on the competition throughout last year. This year looks to hold the same kind of promise for the Eagles as James will be joined by his brother, Jake Cottage, in the central midfield. "Their experience will help this young team adjust to the speed of the college game." said Cagle. "Jake is the natural attacker with lots of pace, and James is the surgical passer that makes everyone work hard off of the ball." Other central midfielders are Adam Kay, a player that Cagle described as "physical" and Channing Hamilton, whom the coach called "a heady player".

Speedsters Daniel Hernandez and Abdelaziz Tapsoba will provide the first options on the flanks. "These guys are only freshmen, but they are skillful and they can really run." quipped Cagle. Other outside midfielders in the mix are Josh Torres, whom Cagle declares “brings intensity to every play," and Gerardo Borjas, who scored the winning penalty kick in last year's ACCA National Title match.

In the past few days, center fullback has been a position of much concern throughout the Eagle's first few practices, but things have seemed to sort themselves out. Leading the way in the middle is Evan Justus, who Cagle says can "get the job done." Joining him is Danny Frid, a player Cagle described as "great in the air, poised on the ball, and knows how to read the game." Chris Galindo moved from a deep midfield into the defense as he had a dominant first scrimmage against a strong NOC team. Another freshman, Jared Scott, has also looked strong in early action and is an option late in matches with his long throw-ins.

Outside fullbacks have lots of quality competition for playing time, with Jamie Hutchinson leading the way. "Jamie is extremely coachable. He is a student of the game and understands positioning and how to work together defensively." Having a fantastic technical ability, Niall Harrison has stepped into the left back position, while Greg Scholes is another quality fullback who Cagle is excited about. "Greg is a terrific fullback with a great future here. He's a little guy who plays rough. We consider all three of these guys as starters and all will see time."

Several strikers have emerged as potential players this fall. Jose Castillo is described as having "a nose for the goal," while Alex Kewin "has courage in front of the goal." Michael Thomas is a player that Cagle says “can score or can set up a score at any time with the most creative of passes,” and Josh Martinez was last year's ACCA Player of the year. Seth Nix and Joseph Kim look to give the Eagles assurance this year, as Nix is a "heady player" and Joseph Kim is "going to surprise people by the end of the season."

"We like the way that we're coming together," said Cagle. "It's a long season, and everyone sustains some bumps and bruises. Not only do we have our starting squad, but we have several more guys waiting on the sidelines that are making our decisions tough."

"The depth will pay big dividends over the course of the season. We have 39 great players on campus. Some guys develop quicker than others. Some blossom as freshmen and some don't see the field until they are older. College soccer isn't for the faint of heart. But when they finished their first week of training camp, with the huge effort that they had put out, each of them felt huge pride in how they had earned the right to have SCU on their chest."

  • SCU 'inks' Northwest's Chris Galindo

Chris Galindo, an All State soccer player from Northwest Classen High School, recently signed a letter of intent to play soccer for SCU. "Chris is a strong, gifted player," said Eagles Coach Neil Cagle. "We're looking for him to have a great career for us. He's not just talented, but he neverm gives up possession of the ball, the kind of guy that makes other players around him better."
Cagle would add, "Were looking to build a deep squad. The kind of team that can sustain the bumps and bruises of the season and not see a let down. The guys we're signing are top quality players and students."
SCU finished 16-5 last season, Cagle's first at the helm, upsetting several higher ranked teams in the process. SCU looks to make an impact in the Midlands Conference, their first in the NAIA.

  • SCU signs Jose Castillo

SCU Soccer Coach Neil Cagle recently inked Capital Hill High School's Jose Castillo. "Jose is a tremendous talent, an All State soccer player with tremendous skill and a great attitude. Jose's Capital Hill teams were always going deep in the playoffs," said Cagle. "He's a great student, a great competitor, and will represent us on the field in the style that all SCU athletics are known for. He's going to be a champion on the field and in the classroom."

SCU is joining the NAIA Midlands Conference. Last season, the Eagles won the ACCA National Championship, the NCCAA Southwest Regional Championship, and competed in the NCCAA National Championships in Kissimmee, Florida.
